No..not another Wordpress version!!

I logged in to my blog account 2 days back, after a verrry long time (I blame my project move in the professional world). I was surprised to find out so many things have happened in the Wordpress world. A new version has been released, many more vulnerabilities have been found and fixed…WAIT…a NEW version?? NOOOO! It feels like I just updated to a new version…is there a new one already!???

Wordpress is churning out new versions faster than my C2Duo / Vista machine can boot :P Don’t believe me? Look at these dates:

How to use Windows Vista for more than 30 days?

Windows Vista Ultimate

There is a nice method posted by Ed Bott of Zdnet on extending the Vista’s trial period to 120 days (~4 months). I stumbled on this only recently, while seriously contemplating installing Vista ultimate in a Core2 Duo + 965GF combo. Nice trick, if you need more time to become comfortable with Vista before taking the plunge.

Chessbase Light 2007 Activation – eh?!

Chessbase Light 2007I love the work being done by the good folks in Chessbase; IMO they have the coolest jobs, they get payed to develop software for CHESS :-) Ohhhh, I wish I had some kinda day job like that! I know video game development is as interesting, but anyway gaming has never been one of my serious interests. Anyway, coming back to CB…I check the Chessbase site more than my Gmail, sometimes, which reminds me of the lack of RSS in their site…but I am not going to complain about that ever, as I feel it is worth visiting their site for the excellent articles they post. I am not sure if Fredrick Friedel ever thought of creating a business model out of the Chess news network they can easily build. Ok, again I am digressing…

I read with interest the article on their Chessbase Light 2007 software. It provides nearly all the functionalities of the full-fledged Chessbase DB software, one of their flagship products, for FREE. Of course, the catch word in the above sentence is “nearly all“. BW, CB Light allows only viewing, you cannot create databases or save games using that. For that you need to upgrade to CB Light Premium, which I guess is the same as Chessbase starter pack minus Bigdatabase 2007/Player encyclopedia/CB Magz.

Chessbase Light 2007 Activation screen

The activation screen looks like the above screenshot (NOTE: I am using the screenshot provided by CB). When I saw this I was like ‘Eh?? What stupidity!!”…Do you see the captcha field in that window? Captcha are used for preventing the bots doing automatic signups, spams et al. Is there any sane reason why the user has to type the code shown in the image????

“Oh, ok…may be this code is part of the activation process”, I thought.

Chessbase Light 2007 Web Activation

When I went to the site meant for generating Activation key, I didn’t find a field for entering the abovementioned captcha code. Then why the heck the CB Light programmers decided to show the captcha code in CB Light? Beats me!

Note that I may be totally missing a valid reason behind having that captcha in a desktop program, if so I’d appreciate if you’d enlighten me!

Xbox 360 damages discs – Be very careful!

If you own a Xbox 360 you surely would have come across the famous “Disc not readable” problem. Whenever it happens, you are forced to take out the disc, clean it, sometimes reboot Xbox 360 to get the disc to play again. I was so scared the first time my Gears of War refused to play, even after repeated cleaning/trying…cleaning/trying ritual. I thought I had lost my Rs.2500 spent on that game. Fortunately, a quick Google search assured me I was not alone and it was not a major problem. But, I stumbled upon another serious problem that can happen if you are not careful – Xbox 360 can damage your discs permanently. This was scary! There are some sound advice on what to do and what not to do with a disc inside Xbox360. Though the problem has been root caused, people are still seeing random scratches. I can only attribute this to Xbox360 loving your discs so much it can’t stop itself from caressing them a bit too harsh :-P

Finally Microsoft has owned up to this and has rolled out a replacement program (Note that MS has its own list of Terms and Conditions). Luckily GoW is covered there :-)

Check out this video that shows Xbox360 scratching a disc.

Xbox 360 to support Windows Live Messenger

Spring update to Xbox 360 is going to be rolled out starting May 7th. Some notable features are:

  • H.264 video support: Up to 15 Mbps, Baseline, Main, and High (up to level 4.1) Profiles with 2 channel AAC LC and Main Profiles.
  • Added MPEG-4 Part 2 video support: Up to 8 Mbps, Simple Profile with 2 channel AAC LC and Main Profiles.
  • Show folder hierarchy for video and other content played from all devices.
  • The screensaver is disabled when playing photos from any source

I am happy they chose to include the folder hierarchy display and disabling screensaver. Those I am sure people would agree, were sorely missed. Now, I can easily play a movie from my movie collection (named xyz part1.avi, xyz part2.avi…) with out searching for individual files. A single “Play” click on the folder containing all these individual files should do the trick!
Xbox360 chat device
Another interesting feature (and the topic of this post) is the “Chat with MSN contacts”. Wow! Now, I can chat with my relatives, who don’t own a Xbox, sitting in the living room, with my parents besides me! This is a killer feature, I’d say. I am not sure if this Xbox update supports video chatting with MSN, but if only they do, man…nothing like it! The above picture is the new accessory Microsoft is planning to release this summer. Kinda bulky looking for a controller, but would make chatting painless. We should be able to use the normal USB keyboard too.

I can now finally leave my wife chatting with my in-laws, to go work on that Wordpress Chess plugin with out any disturbance :)

Great HP Service!

My HP IPAQ started giving me lots of problems 4 weeks back, I guess it didn’t like me dropping it for the 100th time :p.

It’d freeze up, just like that, irrespective of whether I was in a phone call or in the middle of a chess game. very irritating. I tried upgrading the firmware – no use. So, I took it to the nearest HP service center. For those in B’lore, the service center I went to, is in Indira nagar 100ft road, on top of FabMall. To tell you the truth, I didn’t expect them to take it for service, as I didn’t buy this unit in India. As expected, they said they wouldn’t be taking units with International warranty. Mine was APAC warranty, I specifically made sure with the HP Malaysia guys that mine would be supported in India. After some “effective” convincing, they agreed to take it, but, under the condition they could only TRY to fix the problem. WTH? What do you mean “try”?? It seems like HP India is not yet fully equipped to service IPAQ 68xx models. They said they usually replace the unit, instead of trying to root cause. What this “will-try-my-best” terminology basically meant was if they said they couldn’t fix my iPAQ problem, I had to go to Malaysia to fix this or start using this as a costly paper-weight! God!

After 3 weeks of follow up, HP India finally said they would try to see if there is a replacement part available in the Chennai center. Luckily, they have found one! I got a call today from the centre, asking me to collect the repaired unit in 10days time :) Yahoooo, my 35K is saved! Whew, thanks HP!
