Yahoo vs Google: why Yahoo lags behind?

You wanna know why Yahoo lags behind Google? Look at the image below that I took from Yahoo’s careers site today (WW10.4). It shows all open reqs, sorted by date (descending).

YahooAlgorithmWrong

As you probably noticed (follow the arrows please! :P ), the sort hasn’t happened properly. How did the coder miss this? No unit tests funda in Yahoo engineering?? How did the QA team allow this page to go online?

New Yahoo R&D lab: Is Yahoo hiring or firing?

yahoo_india

Yahoo announced a new R&D lab in Bangalore yesterday. This lab, it looks like, will be the center of excellence for next generation search and advertising technologies. To quote Washington Post: “The company has hired Rajeev Rastogi, who has moved from head of Bell Labs India to lead the new lab, and assemble a team of scientists and engineers to focus on new approaches to information extraction and machine learning, multimedia and query processing, the company said. It did not provide details of the number of staff it plans to hire for the lab. The company plans to hire sociologists, micro-economists, and computational scientists among other categories of staff for the lab, the spokeswoman said.

Interestingly, only recently Yahoo! India asked 45 of its employees to quit. And, AFAIK, Yahoo is expected to let go many more across the world. So, why is Yahoo! opening a new R&D lab in India now? All the new reqs that have been posted in their job DB, as well as the walk-ins they have setup show that the new lab is not going to be staffed only by internal transfers…hmm…external hiring in full flow, when internally, people are being redeployed. Crazy, eh?!

Also, what is the guarantee whoever joins now in this R&D lab won’t be asked to leave tomorrow, when Microsoft takes over Yahoo?! Hmm..too many “what if”s, I feel.

Hindi Movies Online – 2

I got more than 10 emails asking me to *upload* their favorite movies online, after I posted “Hindi Movies Online – 1″. Guys, FYI, I didn’t upload any of the movies I listed. The same goes for this one as well as any future posts on this topic. I am just listing what I find in the online video sites.

This time, I am listing the following (new!) movies:

  • Jodha Akbar
  • Aaaja Nachle

Hindi movies online – 1

With all the censorship going on in Google Videos, one would expect a steep reduction in the number of full length (copyrighted) movies being uploaded there. But, my "Top Google Videos" RSS feed doesn’t tell me that! I still see at least 10 – 20 new films daily in my RSS inbox. I used to list films from Google Videos and Youtube (this was before Youtube was acquired by Google), but stopped them because of laziness :) But, now I found an easy way to track the movies; so expect to see posts listing the new movies (& the existing ones) from online sites:

In this post, I have listed 5 Hindi movies. For completeness sake, I have given a description of the plot and external links too. This will be the format I will be following for future online movie posts. Let me know if you find any new movie (full length, any language) online. Only condition is, it should be playable online (no FULL MOVIE DOWNLOAD links, please), from sites like Google Videos or Youtube or Veoh or Metacafe or blah blah.

Enjoy!

Don : The chase begins again (2006)

The Indian team is headed by DCP DeSilva (Boman Irani) who wants to break the back of the drug operations of a drug lord named Singhania. Also helping him is Malik (Om Puri). He believes that capturing Singania’s dangerous and elusive lieutenant, Don, (Shahrukh Khan), will be the most effective way of accomplishing this. Don’s gang consist of Narang (Pawan Malhotra) and Anita (Ishaa Koppikar). Soon, Roma (Priyanka Chopra) joins them but she has other plans – kill Don. Don was responsible for killing her brother Ramesh as well as his fiancee, Kamini (Kareena Kapoor). During a chase with the police the real Don is seriously injured and is captured by DeSilva. Testing Windows Live Writer 2008

Just now installed Windows Live Writer 2008 (Final); The installer they have there is just around 2.3MB, but it downloads the actual Live Writer binaries later. When you execute this "small" file, it scans through your computer for other Live programs (WHY??!!) and offers you a screen full of other Live programs that you *should* try…WTH??

Why is this installer trying to be smart? If I need other Live products, I will download them, just like how I downloaded this. Why MS should push down my throat all their other products?? Irritating!

Also, during the "Detecting other Live programs" phase, I was staring at the progress bar, for a solid 15mins??? Man…what the hell was the program doing at that time?? I should probably setup a VMWare machine and try installing this with Process Explorer/FileMon/RegMon/PortMon running in the background. Oh..btw, before someone starts pointing out that it could be because of my machine, wait…mine is a Core 2 duo + 965GF + 2GB RAM + 1TB RAID0. It is fast enough. Adobe Photoshop CS3 tryout starts in 3 seconds flat!

CodeMuseum thumb Testing Windows Live Writer 2008 imageAnyway, now that Live Writer is finally installed and running (I am typing there, right? :) ), I want to try out the image scaling/uploading features:

I have setup Live Writer to upload my pictures to my FTP. If this works fine, I guess, one of my major reqs is met.

One cool thing about the way Live Writer handles pictures is, the ease with which you can create a thumbnail and all the possible effects (drop shadow / photo border/…) you can add to the images…Beats WordPress’s post editor anytime!

Looks like things work as expected…Kudos to the WLW team for a decent product. If only their packaging / installer team could do something about the Live Installer, I guess WLW will make a pretty neat tool.

Oh..btw, did I tell you WLW supports WordPress 2.3 seamlessly??! ok..not so seamlessly; Support for the new WordPress tags feature is missing out of the box, but you can easily add it as explained  here.

[Update: 2037 IST]

One nice to have feature: When you post something using WLW, it shows the following progress window:

Publishing post

Looks nice, but not informative. If it shows the current action being performed (like, "Uploading the image to ftp:/…." or "Authentication done. Posting now…"), it will be helpful for debugging (if a problem arises). These details can be hidden from the normal user with a collapsed expandable-section in the progress window.

Yahoo!!! Demonoid tracker is up again…

Only yesterday I posted something regarding Demonoid. Today morning (IST), I was pleasantly surprised to see Demonoid’s tracker up and running. You know what it means?? I can finish off all of my 27 torrents that stopped when Demonoid went down now :) Yay!!

It looks like, Demonoid is now hosted in Malaysia. Hmm…are Malaysian laws flexible enough for Demonoid to survive there, or is it going to be another Canadian-saga once more? Lets see. When I was in Malaysis for sometime, I got the impression Malaysian govt. had some strong rules against piracy. Prob, they dont have any stringent cyber laws yet (Off topic: I missed Cyberjaya when I was there, heard many good things about it :( )

Anyway, leave these worries for later and leech away happily, now that the big daddy is back!!

Another MP3 search engine – Tagoo!

On the wake of Demonoid’s demise (!?), the world is seeing many other p2p / file sharing sites being tormented by the likes of MPA, RIAA and all kinda of other alphabet soup organizations.

The recent addition is Tagoo, a new Mp3 search engine, with a RU domain. Since, another Russian site AllOfMp3.com just got virtually nuked by the Russian govt recently, I am not sure how long Tagoo will survive. But, who cares, eh?! If not Tagoo, something else is bound to come up.

I decided to try out Tagoo for some Indian (as in “Country next to China” & not “Native American”) music. Did a search for “India” & got all India.Arie mp3s…hmmm, fair enough. Its my mistake I gave such a vague term. Next I tried “Tamil” (yey!!) & got 4 results!! Hmm…I sure do lack basic searching skills :(
