Note that, you need to have Wii Internet Channel installed in your Wii. If you are trying to use your US-bought Wii outside US, with out a US credit card,try to use this trick.

How to setup Wiisic:

• Download latest version of WiiSic [Direct link to 0.815 / Home page
• Make sure you have a compatible JRE. All JRE1.5+ versions downloaded from Sun website are ok. Microsoft's JVM may not execute this JAR. At least, it didn't work for me under Vista.
• Double click on Wiisic.jar. You should see the launch dialog shown below [for v0.815]. If it gives an error, make sure you are using the proper Sun JRE (not Microsoft’s).

• Now you need to configure the settings. Choose the folder containing your media files first. Make sure you choose your network card from the drop down list in (3). Also. change the port to something like 8081. If you have a 16:9 supporting TV, choose the 16:9 proper player in (2). Following screen shown the settings I used in my computer.

• Now switch on your Wii. Open the Wii Internet channel. Type the IP that is shown under (4) in Opera’s address bar. Wiisic should load now and start playing the stuff you chose under (1) above.

This has to proved to be the most effective inside-LAN-streaming-solution for me, till now. Let me know if you come across any other solutions. 

I read Matthew Reilly’s "Seven Ancient Wonders" last weekend. Book is on my favorite topic – Egypt!! Unfortunately this one reads like a kid’s book. The ease with which the main character of the book solves/crosses all those complex pyramidal snares/traps is ridiculous, to say the least. Anyway, I learnt something about the early water traps and Reilly’s description of Hanging gardens of Babylon was highly imaginative; I’d rate this book 2/5 – you can read it probably once, over flight or when waiting for your wife to finish her shopping I have started on his "Ice Station" next, lets see how it reads.

Last weekend, I also spent lots of time watching the entire 16 season of Survivors : Fans vs Favorites. I have never seen Survivors before, though I knew what the concept was. But, at no point of time I expected it to be so well made and so captivating! I thoroughly enjoyed the isolated environment, the idea of tribes/tribal council and the human dynamics that played out for survival. Wow…an amazing reality show. I personally liked Ozzie a lot in the show, very unfortunate Parvati fooled him in to quitting. I cannot wait for the next season to start!!

In the Wii front, today I got my Carnival games collection. My first impression: I don’t like many of the games included, hopefully multi-player will prove otherwise. Enough of my whining now…time for bed!

In this post, I want to talk about the movie Untraceable. I just finished watching it. My initial impression – "Great, that was interesting!". But now, after some 10 minutes, I realize all the holes and stupidity in that movie. But before I get to that, let me tell you what this movie is about.

Diane Lane plays the role of a computer specialist in FBI cyber crime division. One day she stumbles upon (no, not using StumbleUpon!) an underground sicko site, where somebody live-streams a cat die. That "somebody" doesn’t stop with the cat (obviously…else we won’t have this movie), he moves on to streaming humans die. The crooked but brilliant mind of the killer comes up with contraptions that are linked to the number of people watching the deaths online; More the people login to watch, faster those devices work to kill their subjects. Does the term contraption remind you of SAW?? It did for me. Coming back to the plot: Lane, along with her colleague, starts investigating and soon they both get in to trouble. Her colleague gets killed next — live-streamed, with millions watching. Now comes the big climax, where Lane figures it out all and exposes the criminal, but gets in to his trap herself. Does she fight it out and comes out alive? Of course, she does. What else can we expect from movies! There you go, the complete plot of Untraceable.

No doubt I enjoyed this movie. I started watching this movie with out knowing anything about the story/plot, didn’t even know what it was about. The moment I saw Diane Lane go in to the computer room and start talking about trojans, I got hooked Personally I love these stuff, but I am sure any computer professional would have felt the same. I also loved the technical talk that happened at the beginning of the movie – at least it made sense. But, when Diane Lane told her superior how the killer had "set up a botnet and keeps a mirror of the site in each compromised system and thats why the site keeps popping up again and again even after her repeated tries to shut it down", I was like "Hold on! Hold on! Is it technically possible? Lemme think…he is streaming a real live video, encoded and being distributed online, from a Russian server…AND what is this mirroring thing and botnet thing she is mixing up? AND what about the DNS refresh latency? And what about the live HD quality video…". Before my slow brain cogs could move, latch and find an answer, the next scene started and I forgot the question itself . Do you see what happened? The movie, to its credit, is not slow anywhere. So it keeps throwing all these technical jargon around, but zips on to the next scene so fast, people don’t get time to think about the technical feasibility at all. This is good tactics and has worked perfectly well for this movie. As I said earlier, I didn’t start thinking about the logic holes and the stupid scenes until the movie ended.

Now for some real bloopers:

• TTL being low. What the hell is Diane Lane talking about? Unless I have forgotten my TCP/IP basics, TTL is just a measure to determine when the packets need to be dropped. If you keep a lower value for it, like 1, the packet will be discarded in the next hop. Lower value doesn’t mean it travels faster, as shown in the movie.
• Botnet thing. Though the idea seems logical, I doubt its feasibility. Botnets are a bunch of compromised machines with agents running in each. You can use them to organize an attack (DoS) on a site or something, but streaming LIVE video is kind of far fetched, if not impossible (as far as my limited knowledge goes). You need to have a super-duper trojan developed for creating such a smart zombie network. The botnet should be kind of fault-tolerant, in the sense there has to be a real time way of a zombie picking up from another dead zombie. I probably have to think about this,  but the idea is good. Even then, a simple analysis of a compromised machine will tell you where the video is coming from, since it is a live feed. This botnet should not make the feed source totally untraceable, as shown in the movie.
• Cool server run off the basement. It is shown to take a load of nearly 17 million people at one point of time, watching the live video stream. Man…that must be one hell of a server, with an amazing pipe.
• Russian servers. The servers are supposed to be in Russia. FBI has no jurisdiction, ok…understandable, but can’t they talk to the Russian counterparts to find the server and shut it down? Or FBI thought Russia wouldn’t be interested in a bunch of Americans being killed live over a site?
• The killer pawns the car. I have never seen a car hacked like this before. The killer shuts down the car computer mid-way and Diane Lane’s car stops. STOPS! How can a car stop just because the on-board computer stopped? And, I seriously doubt the technical possibility of doing this car computer hack — unless you have access to the car’s CAN backbone and have the proprietary (I guess) interface software available on hand, it is next to impossible. At least, if the killer is shown to have used an electro magnetic pulse to disrupt the car electronics, it would have been somewhat believable.
• Diane Lane must be deaf. The killer is shown to be in the back seat, but still Diane Lane couldn’t hear him talk to her over the on-board speaker phone. Duh!
• Lane falls in the trap. If I were Diane Lane I would NEVER have come back in to a car that just got hacked by one of the most elite hackers around. What made her come back to the car, neatly close the door and all, when she just escaped out of it in the previous scene?
• Villain gets beaten by the leading actor. In the climax, Diane Lane is hanging from a rope upside down, with her hands tied, her mouth gagged. The killer keeps a gardening device under her. Computer is connected to the pulley so that as more people login, Lane is released to fall on that device and be shredded in to pieces. Not a bad trick, right? The execution (no pun intended) of this scene is laughable. You need to watch this scene to see how stupid it looked. Why didn’t she remove the gag from her mouth? It is not like her hands were tied behind or something. Man, I didn’t understand that at all. And, this is a big **AND**, why the hell did the killer keep her near a poll when she had this much mobility? The killer was shown a 1337 hax0r through out the movie, but this one scene blew that cool image.
• Diane Lane flashing her badge. After getting free and killing the killer, why did the movie end with Diane Lane showing her badge on the camera?? Was she afraid the people who were logged in would take her to be a killer rather than a licensed-killer (read, COP)?? If I were her, I would have got all the IPs that have logged on to the site, from his computer. Or at least, tell something like "You sickos…watching snuff films is bad for health!" to the camera so that all the people who were watching heard her. None of that, she flashes her badge as if she just won it beating the killer in a WWE match…*sigh*

Another interesting thing I noticed is, through out the movie you never see Linux (or some form of Unix). The FBI computer specialist uses…can you guess?….Windows VISTA. And the elite hacker uses……I bet you won’t get this!………Windows XP Oh man…haven’t you guys ever used Linux before? I shudder to think how ELITEEEEE the killer would have been if only he had used Linux!

Hey…its been ages since I wrote a movie review. Its actually good that I wrote this post immediately after watching the movie, when the movie is fresh in my mind and I have the enthusiasm to finish up this post I know how many posts I missed when I decided to write up something first thing in the morning! Laziness is a big killer, I tell you…

Chak De India

Plot:

Chak De India is a film which utilizes the sport of field hockey to explore larger themes relating to sexism, ethnic prejudice, and religious prejudice in contemporary India. The story is told through the relationship which develops between disgraced field hockey superstar, Kabir Khan (Shahrukh Khan), and the members of the Indian women’s field hockey team which he coaches.

The film opens with the final minutes of the Hockey World Cup between the Pakistan national field hockey team and the India national field hockey team, with Pakistan leading, 1-0. When Indian team captain and hockey superstar, Kabir Khan is fouled, he elects to take the penalty shot himself although he did not have the ball. However, his strike flies just above the goal, and India suffers a crushing defeat. Soon after, the media begins to circulate a photograph of him accepting a handshake from the head of the Pakistani team, speculating that Khan (who is a Muslim) might have “thrown” the game as an act of sympathy towards Pakistan. The speculation and prejudice exhibited towards Khan forces him and his mother out of their ancestral home and into exile.

Seven years later, Indian sport officials are surprised to learn that Khan wants to coach the Indian woman’s field hockey team, a job no one else wants (as, an official indicates, the only long term role for women is to be a wife and mother). The team, which is composed of the best 16 players in the country, is widely diverse with regard to region and ethnicity. These differences, however, lead to immediate and sometimes violent friction between the players, which also creates several subplots in the film : Komal Chautala (Chitrashi Rawat) from a village in Haryana conflicts with Preeti Sabarwal (Sagarika Ghatge) from Chandigarh whom she refers to as “memsaab”; tough girl Balbir Kaur (Tanya Abrol) from the Punjab bullies Rani Dispotta (Seema Azmi) and Soimoi Kerketa (Nisha Nair), both from jungle villages in Jharkhand; and Mary Lalte (Kimi Laldawla) from Mizoram and Molly Zimik (Masochon “Chon Chon” Zimik) from Manipur are both treated as “foreign” by virtually everyone they meet. In addition, the players must also contend with sexism not only from strangers but from family members as well: Mary and Molly face repeated sexual harassment; Komal’s parents worry that her interest in hockey will destroy all hope of a good marriage; team captain Vidya Sharma (Vidya Malvade) is forced to choose between hockey and the wishes of her husband’s family; and Preeti’s boyfriend, the vice captain of the India national cricket team mocks her involvement with the team, telling her that her only important role is being his wife. Jab We Met

Plot:

Aditya Kashyap (Shahid Kapoor), a demoralized industrialist, gets even more depressed after attending the marriage of the girl he loves to another. Feeling ashamed to face the world, he walks out of the marriage gathering and boards a train in the night. There he meets Geet Dhillon (Kareena Kapoor), a beautiful, talkative girl who is leaving Mumbai to go to her hometown – Bhatinda (Punjab).

Initially, Geet irritates Aditya greatly, and every meeting becomes mental torture for him. She discloses big plans to him of eloping with her boyfriend Anshuman (Tarun Arora) as she fears resentment from her parents. Geet irritates Aditya to the point of getting him to leave the train. As she tries to get him back on the train, she ends up missing it and the two find themselves stranded on a desolate station with no luggage or money. Geet confronts Aditya and tells him that he is now responsible for getting her safely to her house in Punjab. Both of them begin an idyllic journey through the exuberant North Indian heartland, and make their way through buses, taxis and camel-carts to reach her house.

On arrival, Geet’s family (Pawan Malhotra, Dara Singh and Kiran Juneja) mistakes the two for lovers. Before this misconception can be cleared, Geet escapes to her boyfriend in Manali. Aditya leaves with her, confirming the suspicion that they are lovers. In Manali, Aditya feels empowered to return to Mumbai and resurrect his ailing business.

Destiny despises Geet’s love story as Anshuman avoids and dumps her. On the other hand, Aditya begins to do well in life after he resurrects his failing business empire. One day, Geet’s family, who think that she is with him, confront Aditya. He is shocked to learn that Geet has not returned home. He takes it upon himself to find her and tells her family that he will bring her home in ten days.

Aditya finally tracks her down in a Himalayan town and is traumatized to learn about Geet’s misfortune. Convincing her to face her circumstances, he manages to patch up her relationship with Anshuman, and all three travel back to Bhatinda to announce that Geet and Anshuman are involved. Back in Bhatinda, the family again assumes that Geet and Aditya are together. While trying to clear the misconception, situations make Geet realise that she is in love with Aditya not Anshuman, and they get married.

Plot:

The two men begin imposing themselves on the family’s courtesy, and in the process destroy their phone and ruin all their eggs. Eventually a frustrated Anna demands that the men leave, asking Georg to eject them from the premises. Paul breaks Georg’s leg with Georg’s golf club and the two men take the family hostage. They force the family to participate in a number of sadistic games in order to stay alive.

Paul asks if the family wants to bet that they will be alive by 9 o’clock in the morning, though he doubts that they will win. Between playing their games, the two men keep up a constant patter, and Paul frequently ridicules Peter’s weight and lack of intelligence. He describes a number of contradicting stories of Peter’s past, though no definitive explanation is ever presented as to the men’s origins or motives. When some of the family’s other neighbours arrive for a visit, Anna passes the men off as friends until the visitors leave. Schorschi eventually escapes to the house next door, but finds the family dead. He attempts to shoot Paul with a rifle, but the gun fails to go off. Paul returns him to the house, along with the gun. The Contractor

The next day, her first customer offers her a $100 tip if she can make it to JFK in fifteen minutes. She makes it in nine, making the passenger sick in the process. Meanwhile, a group of fashion models exit the airport.

The action cuts back to New York City where undercover detective Washburn, (Jimmy Fallon) is about to bust a phone card ring from Cuba. He makes up a street name in Havana, which blows his cover, and a gunfight develops. Washburn’s partner is wounded in the arm and the Cubans escape. Trying to follow them in his partner’s car, Washburn starts it in reverse and crashes it. Back at the precinct station, Lt. Robbins, (Jennifer Esposito) confiscates his driver’s license.

Later, hearing of a bank robbery, Washburn in plainclothes encounters trouble flagging down a car to take him to the scene, so flags down a taxi cab, which turns out to be Belle’s. They arrive at the bank just as the four robbers depart in a BMW. Washburn accidentally shoots out one of Belle’s windows and they end up cornering the BMW in an alley. The BMW driver cleverly gives Belle the slip, but as the car passes the recognises the occupants as the same models from the airport. Their leader is Vanessa (Gisele Bündchen). In a misunderstanding, police arrive and hold up Belle and Washburn.

Belle’s cab is impounded as evidence and she is taken in for questioning as a witness to the robbery;

Black and White

Plot:

Subhash Ghai, the proverbial showman and the maker of many memorable masala movies, comes up with a pertinent, hard-hitting, slice-of-life film, appropriately titled ‘Black And White’. The film is about a somber and brooding suicide bomber who has a change of heart and mind after witnessing the harmony-in-diversity of the friendly people of Chandni Chowk.

Newcomer Anurag Sinha plays a fidayeen from an Afghan terror camp who comes to Delhi on a deadly mission. His target is Red Fort. And he will execute his mission on August 15. Read the rest of the review here.

Kabhi Haan, Kabhi Naa

Plot:

The film is about Sunil (Shah Rukh Khan), a small town guy of Goa. He has only two passions – music and Anna Gonsalves (Suchitra Krishnamurthy), his lady love. While he is hated by his father (Anjan Srivastava) for his first passion, his second passion is impressed by Chris Rodrigues (Deepak Tijori) instead, another musician in their band. Fueled by their blossoming romance, Sunil tries to create misunderstandings between the two, but the truth gets divulged finally. He sacrifices his love for Anna in the end so she and Chris can marry and become happy. Depressed, after leaving the couple, he meets a young, lost woman (Juhi Chawla). They are instantly attracted to each other and it is implied that he will finally find happiness with her.

Jaan-E-mann: Let’s fall in love again (Jaaneman)

Plot:

Suhaan (Salman Khan), receives a notice that his divorced wife Piya Goyal (Preity Zinta), who has settled in the United States wants a final settlement of 50 lakh rupees lump sum in return for the alimony that Suhaan did not pay because of his poor financial condition. Suhaan appeals to his uncle Boney (Anupam Kher), a midget and a lawyer for help. They can’t come up with a solution.

Champu aka Agastya Rao (Akshay Kumar) who works for NASA lands up at their doorstep searching for Piya. He fell in love with Piya during his college days but couldn’t express his love to her because she was in love with another person (Suhaan). Piya had ignored Agastya then, a nerd, a nobody, and even broke his heart by courting another guy. A heartbroken Agastya left the college for this reason and didn’t stick around any longer. In his rush Agastya never found out Suhaan is her ex-husband.

Suhaan and Boney hatch a plan to get Agastya and Piya together, so that Suhaan need not pay the alimony to Piya and Agastya gets the girl of his dreams. Suhaan accompanies Agastya to New York City to get Piya hooked to Agastya. They rent an apartment right opposite Piya’s residence and watch each and every move of hers, literally, they use telescopes, binoculars, and survellience techniques. Suhaan succeeds over the following weeks in getting Piya and Agastya together.

However a shocking truth emerges – Piya has given birth to a baby girl, Suhaan’s daughter. Suhaan realizes his mistake and tries to make amends and start a new life with Piya and his baby daughter, Shubhangi. Unfortunately before he can act, Piya gets engaged to Agastya.

It later emerges that Piya’s brother, Vishal, had been hiding letters from her that Suhaan wrote to her. Agastya knows Piya’s heart is truly with Suhaan and not him, so he tells her everything. Piya flies back to India where Suhaan is living an unhappy life as a small-time actor. They meet and fall in love again, starting the family they have both dreamed of.

A few years later, the movie ends where it begins. Agastya is working for NASA with his girlfriend who looks strikingly similar to Piya, Preity Zintakova. The girls talk over videophone and don’t let the guys get a word in edgeways. The movie ends with the couples promising to get together in a few months’ time when the NASA mission is over. Plot:

Black Friday is film based on the 1993 serial bomb blasts in Mumbai which many believe were organised as retaliation for the Bombay riots which left over 1,500 people dead. It was featured at the Locarno Film Festival and received widespread praise. Click here for more info.

Amar Akbar Anthony

Plot:

A ex-convict must flee his mob boss, leaving his family to fend for themselves. The ex-convict’s wife in a fit of bad luck turns blind and inevitably his children are abandoned. They are adopted by a Hindu policeman (Amar), a Muslim tailor (Akbar), and a Catholic priest (Anthony). The Hindu raised son becomes a policeman in his turn; his Muslim-raised brother becomes a singer; and the last brother, played by Amitabh Bachchan, becomes a happy-go-lucky Catholic who lives on the edge of law. The boys meet again and their lives become entangled in an incredible twist of unlikely coincidences and furious action sequences interspersed with songs.

The grieving mother recovers her sight nearer the ending, the criminal mob boss who unwittingly caused all the commotion is punished, and the family is at last re-united.

In Seattle, detective Quentin Conners is unfairly suspended and his partner Jason York leaves the police force after a tragic shooting on Pearl Street Bridge, when the hostage and the criminal die. When a bank is heist with hostage situation, Conners is assigned in charge of the operation having the rookie Shane Dekker as partner. The thieves, leaded by Lorenz, apparently do no steal a penny from the bank. While chasing the gangsters, the police team discloses that they planted a virus in the system, stealing one billion dollars from the most different accounts, using the principle of the Chaos Theory. Further, they find that Lorenz is killing his accomplices

The Grudge 2 (Greek Sub)

Plot:

In Pasadena, Mrs. Davis sends her daughter Aubrey Davis to Tokyo to bring her sister Karen Davis, who is interned in a hospital after surviving a fire, back to the USA. After their meeting, Karen dies and Aubrey decides to investigate what happened to her and gets herself trapped in the same situation, being chased by the ghost of the house. Meanwhile in Tokyo, the three high school mates Allison, Vanessa and Miyuki visit the famous haunted house and are also chased by the ghost. In Chicago, Trish moves to the apartment of her boyfriend Bill, who lives with his children, the teenager Lacey and boy Jake. On the next door, weird things happen with their neighbor.

American Hustle: The Movie

Plot:

Stand-up comedian Katt Williams (FRIDAY AFTER NEXT) stars in this feature-length comedy. The film follows Katt as he takes a trip to Hollywood, where he hopes to break into the movie industry. But Katt’s dreams lie in tatters when he is cast in increasingly ridiculous and stereotyped roles, so he remembers where his real loyalties lie, and sets off on a stand-up comedy road trip. Mayhem and a lot of laughs ensue as Katt and friends meet some weird and wonderful people on their travels.

RISE: Blood Hunter

Plot:

Rise: Blood Hunter is a 2007 horror/thriller film directed by Sebastian Gutierrez. It is a Samuel Goldwyn Films release. Rise is a supernatural thriller in which a reporter (Liu) wakes up in a morgue to discover she is now a vampire. She vows revenge against the vampire group responsible for her situation and hunts them down one by one. Chiklis plays “Rawlins,” a haunted police detective whose daughter is killed by the same group and seeks answers for her gruesome death. Producer Sam Raimi confirmed that a sequel is in development with Ben Katai writing the script though he is unsure if Liu or Chiklis will reprise their roles.

Plot:

Roy Solomon, his wife Denise, their teenage daughter Jessica and their little son Ben move from Chicago to an old farm in North Dakota to rebuild their family, financially affected by the long unemployment of Roy and a car accident of Jessica that has brought serious problems to Ben. Roy plants sunflowers in the land and hires the stranger Burwell to help him until the harvest. When Jess sees ghosts and poltergeists in the house, her parents do not believe on her. She tries to prove that she is not insane or trying to call their attentions, and discovers the fate of the former owners.

Plot:

This is a comedy with three physically impaired people: Tom (Jaiyant – deaf), Dick (Naren – blind), and Harry (Debraj – dumb or mute). They start making their moves to cast an impression on Celina , who is least interested in acknowledging their presence. Where as in Tom’s life there’s Bijlee, a fisherwoman, who is completely besotted by Tom, and does not leave any stone unturned to express her desire. On the other hand there is Suprano (Yeshwant), a bad man, who is out to prove that he is the worst villain ever. Tom, Dick & Harry unknowingly become the target of Suprano, by being the biggest barrier in his business deals

Lage Raho Munnabhai

Plot:

Munna is in love with the voice of Jahnavi (Vidya Balan), a radio jockey. He devises a plan to meet her when she announces a contest on the life and beliefs of Mahatma Gandhi set for 2 October—Gandhi Jayanti, a national holiday celebrating the birth of Gandhi. Circuit helps Munna win the contest by kidnapping and then bribing a group of professors. As the winner, Munna is granted an interview with Jahnavi where he lies to her, presenting himself as a professor of history and a Gandhi specialist. Jahnavi subsequently asks Munna to present a lecture on Gandhi to a community of senior citizens who live in her home, called the "Second Innings House". In order to prepare for this event, Munna engages in a period of intense study of the life and works of Gandhi.

It is during this period that the image of Mahatma Gandhi (portrayed by Dilip Prabhavalkar), referred to by his nickname, "Bapu", or "father", appears and offers help and advice to Munna. He also encourages Munna to tell the truth about himself to Jahnavi. Gandhi continues to appear each time Munna sings Raghupati Raghava Raja Ram (a song often sung in Gandhi’s memory). With Gandhi’s help, Munna succeeds in impressing Jahnavi and cultivates a new life based upon Gandhism (particularly non-violence and truth) which transforms everyone with whom he comes into contact. Indeed, Munna starts to co-host a radio-show with Jahnavi and Gandhi’s image, guiding his audience to use Gandhigiri (a neologism for Gandhism) to solve everyday problems.

Namaste London

Plot:

Jasmeet "Jazz" Malhotra (Katrina Kaif) is an Indian girl, brought up lovingly by her father Manmohan Malhotra (Rishi Kapoor). Jazz loves everything that is British – something her father, a very Indian man with very Indian values, does not approve of. And he’s not alone. Parvez Khan (Javed Sheikh), Manmohan’s best friend, has a son, Imran Khan (Upen Patel), who also embraces Western culture. In fact, he lives with his British girlfriend, something Parvez simply cannot tolerate.

Jazz is forced to marry a local from India: Arjun Singh (Akshay Kumar), Punjabi farmer. When the couple come back to London, it turns out that they are not married under British law due to Jazz’s deception to her father. Arjun Singh is crushed to find this out. Furthermore he realizes that his beautiful bride still intends to marry her British boyfriend, thus being forced to watch as Jazz flirts with another man. However, Arjun won’t give up without a fight and sets out to make his wife fall in love with him.

Provoked

Plot:

Kiranjit Ahluwalia (Aishwarya Rai), a battered Punjabi homemaker and mother of two, living in Southall, UK with her 2 children and abusive, alcoholic husband, Deepak Ahluwalia (Naveen Andrews). Unable to bear the brutality and repeated rapes at the hands of her spouse, she sets fire to him, unintentionally killing him. Charged with murder, her case comes to the notice of a group of South Asian social workers running an under funded organization called the Southall Black Sisters.

After being sentenced to life imprisonment, she befriends her cellmate, a caucasian woman named Veronica Scott (Miranda Richardson), who teaches her English. Veronica is also friends with several girls in the prison and stands up for Kiranjit against the local prison bully. Veronica realises what a good person Kiranjit is and enlists her brother, Edward Foster QC (Robbie Coltrane), a highly respected Queen’s Counsel, to aide in Kiranjit’s appeal. Edward, in turn, realizes Kiranjit’s importance to his sister and the importance of her case. His sister’s request has additional meaning given that Veronica would not let him help her with her own appeal due to their on off relationship since childhood.

Before Kiranjit’s appeal hearing the Southall Black Sisters bring her plight to the attention of the media by organizing rallies to gather public support for her freedom. She is ultimately freed by the judicial system in a landmark case called "R v Ahluwalia", redefining provocation in cases of battered women in the UK. (She was reconvicted from murder to manslaughter; but released with time served). Kiranjit is reunited with her children and subsequently given an award by Cherie Blair, for her crusade against domestic violence. (The award is not shown on the film although it is accredited at the end).

Hanuman (Animated)

Plot:

The movie relates how Hanuman was born to Anjani (a female Apsara) and Kesari, by the blessings of Vayu-Dev, the Wind God. Hanuman, who is the 11th rudra avatar of supreme being GOD Shiva himself. He was blessed with supreme intelligence, strength and divine powers. As a baby, Hanuman was quite naughty and used his powers to pester the saints living in the nearby forest. Once when he was hungry he leapt to catch the sun thinking it was a fruit.

On the insistence of Vayu, Indra and the other Gods came together to bless baby Hanuman of immortal life. Amongst the other blessing a few are: no fear/harm from the Brahmastra, no harm could befall him from any weapons, fire and water. He could overcome death and he could transform his body to take the smallest form or attain the biggest form of life. Blessed with divine powers Hanuman grew up to be powerful and mighty. He helped Lord Ram and Laxman in their search for Sita. Hanuman burned the golden city Lanka and he with his super powers helped Lord Ram and Laxman defeat Ravan and secure the release of Sita. Seeing his devotion and love towards him, Lord Ram blessed Hanuman with the boon of immortality.

Vivah

Plot:

Poonam (Amrita Rao) lost her parents, when she was very young. She was brought up by her uncle Krishna Kant (Alok Nath) and her aunt Rama (Seema Biswas). However, Rama is jealous of her and barely talks to her, since Poonam is more beautiful than her own daughter Rajni (Amrita Prakash), who is lively and friendly. Bhagat-ji (Manoj Joshi), a jeweller, and a friend of Krishna Kant, likes Poonam very much and decides to matchmake her with Prem (Shahid Kapoor), Mr. Harish Chandra’s (Anupam Kher) son, as Bhagat-ji is friends with Mr. Harichandra.

Mr. Harichandra informs Prem of his plans to matchmake him, as he believes Prem is of proper age, young enough to adapt to someone else, and, Prem’s brother, Sunil (Samir Soni), was about the same age when he married Bhavna (Lata Sabharwal). Prem, however, is hesitant to marry, since he thinks himself to be too young and wants to focus on his career first. Harichandra convinces him to meet Poonam first. They visit Poonam’s family and let Prem and Poonam to get to know each other. Though their first conversation is awkward, Prem and Poonam decide to get married, as they are instantly attracted to each other. The two families agree to meet each other again, so Prem and Poonam get the opportunity to know each other better. Krishna Kant invites Prem’s family to their summer residence in Som Sarovar and Harishchandra accepts.

Poonam anxiously awaits Prem to come to Som Sarovar, however, until Bhavna arranges a meeting between the two, they barely have the chance to talk to each other. After several carefree days, Harichandra and his family has to leave again because of the family business, which leaves Poonam and Prem only the opportunity to communicate via telephone, internet or letter. Despite the distance between them, they grow closer and Prem, before going to a business trip to Japan, tells Poonam on the phone that he has fallen in love with her. When Prem comes back from Japan, Poonam is there to greet him on the airport, gets to spend some time at his house and finally returns to her own family on order to prepare for the wedding.

However, two days before the actual wedding, a fire emerges at Krishna Kant’s house. Poonam gets heavily burned, because she saves Rajni. Prem, occupied with his own wedding preparations, is informed by Bhavna of Poonam’s accident and goes to see his fiancée at the hospital. She is very unsure if Prem will marry her, now that she has been scarred. The doctor (Mohnish Behl) informs the family that there is hope, however the operation to save Poonam may be dangerous and Poonam will take much time to recover. Harichandra arranges for specialists to be flown in from Delhi and Prem, despite her injury, still wishes to marry her and accepts her as a wife by bringing sindhoor to her at the hospital. The operation is successful and the wedding commences.

Aaja Nachle

Plot:

Aaja Nachle is about a women’s journey back to her hometown to teach the importance of art and artifacts, rekindling lost relationships and bringing back to life the theatre where she learnt the lessons of life, love and dance. Dia Srivastav (Madhuri Dixit) returns to her hometown Shamli from New York to meet her ailing guru (Darshan Jariwala). On reaching she finds out about the death of her guru and adding to her distress, she is informed about the Government’s decision to pull down Ajanta Theatre, the place where she was taught to live, love and dance. To fulfill her guru’s last wish Dia takes it upon herself to save the monument from destruction and bringing back to life the art of music and dance. With the help of her Guru’s friend Doctor (Raghubir Yadav), Dia takes up the challenge of putting together a show in two months time casting the people of Shamli. Winning the hearts of the people of Shamli town, overcoming the offenses of politicians and a powerful contractor, finding her member cast and producing a theatrical show is not an easy task. How and will she succeed in saving Ajanta from demolition? This forms the rest of the story.

With all the censorship going on in Google Videos, one would expect a steep reduction in the number of full length (copyrighted) movies being uploaded there. But, my "Top Google Videos" RSS feed doesn’t tell me that! I still see at least 10 – 20 new films daily in my RSS inbox. I used to list films from Google Videos and Youtube (this was before Youtube was acquired by Google), but stopped them because of laziness But, now I found an easy way to track the movies; so expect to see posts listing the new movies (& the existing ones) from online sites:

In this post, I have listed 5 Hindi movies. For completeness sake, I have given a description of the plot and external links too. This will be the format I will be following for future online movie posts. Let me know if you find any new movie (full length, any language) online. Only condition is, it should be playable online (no FULL MOVIE DOWNLOAD links, please), from sites like Google Videos or Youtube or Veoh or Metacafe or blah blah.

Don : The chase begins again (2006)

Plot:

In 2006, the drug trade is booming. The Malaysian Intelligence and Anti-Narcotic Department are called upon for assistance by their Indian counterparts. There are rumours that a drug gang has recently moved their headquarters to Kuala Lumpur. The Indian team is headed by DCP DeSilva (Boman Irani) who wants to break the back of the drug operations of a drug lord named Singhania. Also helping him is Malik (Om Puri). Don (1978)

Plot:

Don (Amitabh Bachchan) is the leader of an underworld gang until Police Officer D’Silva (Iftekhar) tracks him down and in an attempt to catch him ends up killing him. But Don’s death is only known to D’Silva. So Officer D’Silva tracks down a lookalike of Don named Vijay. Vijay impersonates Don to take down the rest of Don’s gang while the DSP promises him that he will give a proper education to his wards who are actually the children of Jasjit (Pran). Meanwhile, Jasjit comes out of prison after serving his term, only to find Officer D’Silva having a red diary that would show Vijay’s true identity. Officer D’Silva is killed by Malik who is introduced as the Interpol officer, but is in fact the real king of the underworld. It’s now a race to retrieve the diary in which the DSP has documented the substitution of the real Don with the innocent Vijay.

Mohabbatein

Plot:

Three young men arrive at a train station during a night, they are all joining a famous and prestigious private school in India, ‘Gurukul’, they strike an instant friendship. Gurukul is run by a stern headmaster named Narayan Shankar, played by Amitabh Bachchan. He is very strict disciplinarian who believes his institute runs because of his principles, rules and disciplines. Apparently the students are picked from universities all over the country to study further in Gurukul and the headmaster had high expectations of them. The headmaster has instituted a strict anti-romance policy. Students are there to learn, he says, not to party and flirt. Students who become romantically involved will be expelled. The Train

Plot:

Vishal (Emraan Hashmi) is working in Bangkok as an advertisement executive. He is married to Anjali (Sayali Bhagat) and has a cute little daughter Nikki. Vishal and Anjali are trying their level best to save their marriage. Vishal is under a lot of pressure both at home and at work.

One fine day on his way to work on the train, he meets Roma Kapoor (Geeta Basra). Its almost love at first sight. Soon Vishal gets to know that even Roma is trapped in an unhappy marriage. Their unfortunate circumstances lead them to empathize with each other, which ultimately leads to an adulterous affair. Back home, Anjali gets suspicious because of Vishal’s unusual behavior. Just when things could not get any worse, Vishal realizes his secret is known to an unknown stranger. What follows is an edge of the seat thriller which is worth a watch.

Plot:

You probably have already bumped in to the all-new Google Street View feature provided by Google Maps. This is one of the most amazing features I have seen, it allows you to view a real photo of any street (provided Google has a camera there), have a virtual walk through, zoom in and have a clear look at the sign boards and more, all in a glorious 360degree view!! Mind boggling. Currently it supports only San Francisco Bay Area, New York City, Las Vegas, Denver and Miami. Hopefully Google expands this to India soon (hmm, I know I am being too optimistic….may be we need to ask for an Amazon.in first!).

Another feature, still in beta, is Mapplets. These are technically small Google gadgets that can provide a specific functionality based on the Google Maps API. For example, Google currently has a mapplet for real estate search that pin points in the map the houses that match your search criteria.

When I checked this morning, I was pleasantly surprised by the number of sites built around Google Street View. These sites offer interesting links and placemarks that everyone needs to see in Google StreetView. I have listed some below:

I loved the way the man behind the legend came through as a normal, fun loving person on screen. He was so expressive in this interview that you can’t help liking him, just a look in to that piercing eyes and the charisma he oozes on screen will make you his fan, I bet! I wish he had lived longer (or allowed to live longer!).

I was actually surprised by how casual (artificial?!) Bruce Lee spoke! With all those “you better believe it maannn” & “You better be careful, babee”, he sounded more like those rappers than an oriental fellow…I like his voice, goes very well with his image…BTW, did you know he didn’t like being called a “Super Star”

This is a funny video of Conan O’Brien visiting Intel HQ at Santa Clara. I have never been to SC, but I can relate to what he says very well. In fact, the saying inside Intel is “If you have seen one, you have seen them all!”, this is very true for the buildings Intel builds. In Bangalore, Intel has a building at Outer ring road, which looks more or less similar to the SC building shown in the video, though I’d say not as lifeless and dull! The one at Airport road (where I am currently sitting) is not that bad, actually.

The movie is funny in its own way. If you have been ever left wondering, while watching a film, what the hell is happening, then I am sure you will love this film No complex plots, no need to exercise the grey cells, just plain pure fun. The events in this film unfold fast enough for you not to get bored. No fancy fight scenes, no gory octopus eating scenes, but still See you after school is extremely watchable, because of the way it has captured one full day of Dahl‘s life.

One of my favorite scenes is when Dahl’s friend teaches him the survival tactics, talking about Sharks, blowfish and stuff. Immediately after this, Dahl decides to apply what he learnt and unfortunately picks up the wrong “fish” – the school bully! People freeze, blowing wind stops, the school bully stares at the puny looking Dal and suddenly the school bully turns in to a shark and bites off Dahl’s head. Pretty good! To sum it up, this is one of the most enjoyable movies out there. My list of favorite Korean movies is actually increasing day by day!

BTW, the official site for this film, mentioned everywhere (http://www.oksang2006.com/) is not OFFICIAL anymore. It is just a parked domain, popping up ads and installing ActiveX components. Stay clear off that site.
